Summer vacation is here and it is important for students to continue reading. Research has shown that children who do not read during the summer months can lose approximately 3-4 months of reading gains made during the previous school year (U.S. Dept. of Ed., 1996). It has also been found through surveys and test data that children who read more during the summer perform better on reading comprehension tests in the fall than their peers who read one or no books during this time (Education Week, 2004). In light of this research and in recognition of the emphasis on independent reading made by the New York State Standards, we are continuing the Voluntary Summer Reading Program. The NYS Standards state that children should be independently reading a total of 25 books each year. With this in mind, the attached list has been generated for our incoming Grades 1-5 students to help them reach this goal. This reading list was compiled based on suggestions from each elementary school librarian of the Smithtown CSD. Please note: This list should serve only as a recommended reading list: it may be supplemented with other books matching your child’s interests.
