Course Description

 

This course will serve as a your introduction into the vast world of psychology.  We will be examining topics within each of the five domains of Psychology – methods, biopsychology, cognition, development, and socioculture.   Some of these topics include historical perspectives, learning, developmental psychology, states of consciousness, personality, abnormal psychology, and social psychology.  Most of the work in this course will be in the form of lectures, discussions, group work, experiments, and projects.  Get to know your classmates very well.  You will be doing a lot of work with them this semester.    

 

 

Materials

 

Textbook –         This course does not have a textbook.  However, readings and handouts will provide you with the materials necessary to succeed in this course.

 

Materials –        You need to purchase a ˝ inch 3 ring binder.  More materials may be required as the year progresses.

 

 

Expectations 

 

Grading –          Grades will be based upon a combination of the following:

Quizzes

Projects

Homework

Classwork and Participation (both essential requirements in this course)

                                       A final grade may be overridden by the classroom instructor based on a semester/year                                        review of the student’s work and mastery of the subject matter.

 

 

Homework –      Homework will be assigned in this course and graded.

 

Final Exam –    I reserve the right to give you either an in-class final exam or a group project based on your performance and behavior in the class.

 

Attendance –      You are expected to come to class regularly.  Unexcused absences and lateness will not be tolerated.  If you are absent, all work must be made up in the time period designated.  A note is required for all excused absences.

 

Class Rules –     1) Respect one another’s opinions – nothing less will be tolerated.

                          2) There are no such things as absolutes. 

                          2) Do the work and do it well.

3) When necessary, I will contact your parents/guardians.

            

Extra Help –      Extra help is available by appointment. 

 

Leadership –      We are avid supporters of the Leadership program here at Smithtown High School.  Throughout the course of the year, we will be participating in a variety of events offered by the Leadership program. 

 

E.A.S.T. –          Excellence, Achievement, Spirit, and Tolerance – these are qualities that each student in this class is expected to exhibit in our classroom and throughout the school.  It is imperative that we be respectful of one another’s ideas and opinions.
